Hey guys, who wants to hear me rant about this article?
https://www.airyhair.com/blog/5-dangerous-deadliest-fashion-trends-history/amp/
No one? Great! Let's get started!
1. Radioactive Hair Treatments- okay, this is pretty stupid, wanting you hair to glow in the dark, plus it had terrible side effects. So we're off to a decent start.
2. Foot Binding- Most of us have heard of this, and it is honestly sad.
3. Neck Rings- The writer of these short paragraphs says that there are many dangers to wearing neck rings to make one's neck appear longer, but never provide any. According to Wikipedia (I'm lazy, lol), these rings, worn by women and sometimes men of the Kayan people in parts of Asia, push down the collar bone and shoulders, creating the illusion of a long neck. This could lead to breathing difficulties, obviously. Girls usually begin wearing neck rings at age 2 or 3, which is a much slower and less painful process than if they decided to begin wearing them around age 12. Over all, this is a painful and sometimes dangerous practice, but not quite as terrible as they would lead you to believe.
4. The Fontange- I had never heard of this tall ribbon headdress worn by ladies in Europe in the 17th and 18th century, but the idea in this article is that they were rather flammable, especially since this was when everything was lit by candles. I'd like to point out that the Fontange is actually the name given to the ribbons which support the actual headdress, the Frelange. The whole ensemble was known as The Commode. The more you know.
5. I'm skipping 5 because I honestly don't feel like researching high collars, and instead I will tell you that this author for https://www.Britannica.com thinks that Commodes should come back in fashion.
6. Tapeworms! 😋 (Please do not consume a parasite to lose weight, like what-)
7. Lead Facials- I'm getting bored of writing this, but it goes without saying that caking lead all over your face is probably not a great idea. Symptoms of lead poisoning for adults include high blood pressure, difficulty remembering things, muscle pain, joint pain, mood disorders, difficulty concentrating, and more. I got this from https://www.mayoclinic.org . I still don't like Queen Elizabeth I, so don't try to change my mind.
8. Corsets- I'm about to get really mad. Okay, for the EIGHT BILLIONTH TIME, wearing normal corsets is VERY different from tightening those corsets. Corsets are for slimming the waist and giving the body a better way to support many layers of heavy clothing, like women wore in the 1800s. Tight-lacing was when someone would pull the strings of the corset as tight as possible to achieve a significantly smaller waist. Narurally, this was dangerous and uncomfortable, so most women didn't do it very often. It was mainly used for dances or other special occasions, but was still a bit hazardous. If you want to hear more about corset myths, I suggest you watch Karolina Żebrowska. She has a great channel, but I warn you there is some language. (As in curse words. Or Polish. She speaks Polish.)
9. Bleeding- The fact that they used a painting of Marie Antoinette when talking about the renaissance is annoying to no end, so we're skipping this one.
10. Radioactive Cosmetics- The reused a picture from the radioactive hair one, and this is obviously dangerous, although they didn't know what at the time. Radioactivity is very dangerous. Marie Curie, a scientist who worked closely with radioactive elements, died of Leukemia and her notebooks are still too radioactive to touch safely.
11. Nightshade Eyes- I had never heard of this before, but apparently putting drops of liquid from nightshade, a poisonous but beautiful flowering plant, (I'm pretty sure it's Tropa Belladonna, by I might be wrong and I don't feel like looking it up. 😐 makes your pupils larger. This is quite dangerous as one would assume, so they're not wrong here, as far as I can tell.
12. Lastly, we have Arsenic Hair Removal- Arsenic is a poison. Bad. Bad poison. I learned from Wikipedia that it is virtually untraceable if given in small doses over a long period of time (That's basically the sentence word for word.) They had dies, especially a really gorgeous green, that had high levels of arsenic. Or maybe cyanide. IDK, and I don't care. (Picture below.)
So, thank you for reading this whole speech.
Please correct me in anything I'm wrong about. I may do more rants lie this in the future, this was fun.
Stay safe and have a great day!

ammyk The typos physically hurt me.

Queeny Ikr- Corsets were not freaking dangerous. Women wore them like we wear bras today. The tightened ones were bad, but they were VERY rare and faced backlash even in Victorian society.

Ash Oof, that’s a very long rant.

ammyk Thank you Ash.

JD2005 From what I have seen in a few videos, the neck rings seem to be really terrible. 😬

EloquentRacer92 I read the article!

ammyk Okay, thanks JD.

GemHeart Ikr. Corsets- like, they were a part of the culture.

ammyk I am not an expert. I just got this from watching way too much YouTube videos about fashion history and why am I commenting this when no one will ever see it?
