I was looking at some stuff my guidance counselor put out on her Google Classroom. One of them was on the recent derecho. The website person had said, "In Iowa, we don't worry about severe storms until the sky turns green or you see a funnel." And that... is quite true. For the derecho, the sky had been green in Cedar Rapids, but not where I live. My mom had been smart, checked the weather app, and had me put our outdoor trashcan inside, our porch chairs and stuff had to be moved, and anything we had outside not nailed down pretty much came inside. I had been texting my friend at the time, Grace, and told her a storm was gonna happen, so her parents checked the weather and started bringing their stuff in. A few minutes later, the storm hit with 100+ mph winds. We lost a tree. The tree just kinda flopped and it was down. My mom and I were in the living room looking out the windows, seeing other people's trash cans being flown down the street. Then our power went out, and my brother decided to come down from sleeping upstairs and investigate -_-
ammyk Well. Guess I'm moving to Iowa for the sole purpose of watching my trash can fly away.
lunamoonlight Lol. It's the first time I've seen a storm like that. Same for my mom and maybe grandma too
CrispyPlop Never seen a storm. We don't get many of those in South Cali
CrispyPlop Only rain. and very little at that
ammyk Actually, we do occasionally have tornadoes (tornados?) in Virginia. I think a warehouse collapsed from one a year or two ago. But I've never been affected by them. But they're definitely much less frequent than other states.
lunamoonlight It;s tornadoes, yes
